The United States Energy Department has approved financial help to be given to Georgia based Southern Company along with two partners to construct 2 Nuclear power plants in Burke County Georgia. The loan guarantee, which would guarantee $8.3 billion, would be repaid to the banks by the borrowers if the Plants are profitable, otherwise the loan would be repaid by the federal government. The builders are hoping to have a license to construct and run the plants by the end of 2011 and the project is still subject to the approval of the Nuclear Regulatory Committee with regards to the design of the reactors.

These reactors would be the first to be constructed in the U.S. since the 1970′s and would help boost a struggling jobs situation here in Georgia. The decision to start this process has had mixed reviews with environmental groups opposing the construction saying nuclear energy is not the cleanest or most efficient source of energy.

What do you think? Would you welcome the construction of 2 nuclear reactors to stimulate job creation or oppose for environmental reasons?
